Tooth Wear – Case 1

Mr L had been referred to Dr Dunn from another practitioner. As is commonly seen in dentistry today, the patient had aggressive tooth wear, which could only be rectified with a full mouth reconstruction – restoring the whole mouth using all-ceramic crowns. It was decided that a number of dental disciplines be combined in order to achieve the best result.

Due to a less than ideal periodontal (gum) condition, initial hygiene therapy was completed with our in-house dental hygienist to ensure the patients’ soft tissues were healthy and therefore ready for treatment; specialist endodontic assessment was carried out to ensure that all teeth were satisfactory and the nerves undamaged; and after completing a diagnostic template for future restorations, the specialist periodontist carried out crown lengthening procedures, based on this prescription for ideal tooth shape and length. It was only after all aspects of the patients’ reconstruction had been assessed that Dr Dunn commenced the final ceramic crowns.

Not only were we able to protect his teeth from future wear and sensitivity, as well as bite related issues, we were able to achieve a brighter, whiter smile – one of our patients’ main concerns at the initial consultation.

Finally, he was made a night guard in order to protect these new crowns from damage due to his grinding. With regular assessment (an important part of our treatment philosophy) our patient is now comfortable, not only functionally but also aesthetically.
