Porcelain Veneers – Case 1

Ms J had been a patient of the practice over 20 years ago and returned to Dr Dunn to improve her aging smile. She had a number of old, worn restorations that were discoloured and a particularly ‘gummy’ smile. All of these factors were affecting her confidence, and as a school teacher this was particularly important! At her initial consultation the possibility of orthodontics was discussed, in order to correct the misalignment of the pre-molars and create a more uniform arch. Ms J decided that she would prefer treatment without this orthodontic option and so a treatment plan was formulated to meet her wish to have a youthful, more beautiful smile using restorative techniques.
Dr Dunn undertook crown lengthening procedures on the upper front teeth to reduce her gummy smile and to provide a more ideal symmetry to her final restorations. As our patient had a wide smile line, it was necessary to restore the upper eight front teeth with all-ceramic veneers. The patient had enough natural tooth structure remaining for veneers to be a viable option as opposed to all-ceramic crowns.
Prior to the placement of the veneers, two sessions of in-office whitening with our dental hygienist was carried out, in order to lift the underlying natural tooth structure and help contribute to a natural, translucent final restorative result. Leaving dark underlying tooth often results in a matte, ‘denturish’ appearance to veneers – something Dr Dunn is careful to avoid. In only two appointments, the veneers were prepared and then bonded. Now, Ms J has everyone reason to smile at the front of the class!
